MSF Basic RiderCourse

The Basic RiderCourse (BRC) is designed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation,
a course that almost 6 Million riders have taken. You can view the video or read below
what you can expect in the course.

A Day on the Range...

The Beginning (Classroom Day 1)

The course begins in the classroom with 2½ hours of  activities that prepare you for your
first day on the range. The classroom is located at The Pasadena Business Park (Locations).
You'll learn about motorcycles, as well as risk awareness, risk acceptance and risk management.
You'll also learn about protective equipment, basic motorcycle controls and operation, what
to look for in a pre-ride inspection, and how we communicate with you on the range.
Here's a preview of the Rider Handbook.

Range Day 1

On the range (Locations) your RiderCoaches (an experienced motorcyclist-coach certified by the MSF) will start you off by getting you familiar with the motorcycle and its controls. Then you progress to learning the "friction zone," which gets the motorcycle moving. Then you'll move on to straight-line riding, stopping, shifting, controls practice, turning, cornering and stopping quickly. You'll be amazed at how much you can learn in a day!

Classroom Day 2

The focus of this class is to prepare you for the road. You'll learn strategies that make use of Search-Evaluate-Execute (SEE), a special MSF technique for actively looking for and preparing yourself to avoid hazards and pitfalls. You'll also learn about lane positioning, RiderRadar, other mental aspects of riding, maximum braking and swerving, and riding impairments.

All this will prepare you well for the knowledge test. A 50-point, multiple choice test of the material covered and discussed in the two classroom sessions.

Range Day 2

You'll be ready for another day of more riding to learn how to control the motorcycle. You'll learn how pressing and leaning helps you corner or turn, you'll gain techniques in cornering judgment, negotiating curves, how to handle obstacles and lane changes, and swerving if you ever need to. About this time you'll be ready for the skill evaluation. This will test your ability to perform various maneuvers that you have already practiced over the two days of riding.

Once your RiderCoaches hand you the BRC Course Completion card, you'll join almost 6 million
riders who have developed good and safe riding techniques through this MSF course. And your
introduction to the world of motorcycling has just begun!
